Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
