A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
