The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
